He writes beautifully on natural history, and includes his opinions about man's place in the world. As he was professor at the University of Pennsylvania, his writing is well researched. Although this essay collection is 500 pages, about 50 pages are notes and references. His essays should be used in writing classes in demonstrating the art of essay writing. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The "journey" is evolution of life on Earth, putting in context human evolution: looking at paths not taken, or taken and leading to extinction. Ends with acknowledgment that secret of life remains out of reach of science - and unlikely to be a "chemical or protoplasm" that science will identify as a "secret ingredient".
I appreciate Eiseley's sense of the overall evolutionary narrative, and his way of selecting micro examples to muse upon that macro picture. Looking forward to the other books collected in this edition.
