Nær byen Mariviller bliver en lille familie på skovtur overfaldet af en bisværm. Forældrene William og Mary Peterson dør af stikkene, mens børnene Karen, Tim og Randy bare bliver stukket slemt. . John Wood på 35 er "environmental biologist" og arbejder på at begrænse invasive arters fremmarch. Hans chef på 52, Sheldon (kaldet Shelly) Hubbard, tror ikke på at det var afrikanske dræberbier, der var involveret i Maryville. På en konference møder Wood en sød ung brazilianer på 28, Maria Teresa de Moura Amaral. De tiltrækkes af hinanden og ender i seng sammen. Næste dag tager de sig en lille udflugt til Maryville. En anden insektforsker har fundet ud af at nogle græshopper tåler DDT og endda kan bruge det mod deres fjender. En biavler Henry David opdager at hans bier giver stort udbytte, men også er blevet tilbøjelige til at sværme og stikke af. Og så er de mere agressive. Wood får en ide om at nogle af bierne producerer en slags nervegift og det stemmer lidt for godt med at Karen dør pludseligt og at statistikken synes at skjule en række dødsfald af samme slags. ??? De skræmmende beretninger om dræberbier er ikke så skræmmende på 50 års afstand. Standardthriller med en trussel, som de gode videnskabsfolk nedkæmper lige inden jordens undergang er nær. This was the beginning, barely noticed, only a few scientists felt the first stirrings of terror. But then the death toll began to mount - and terror erupted into national panic as great swarms of savage bees, deadly killers, blotted out the sun in their spread across the country. About 30 deaths a year in the U.S. are attributed to bites from bees, wasps and hornets.What caused the bees to attack is not known. This was the beginning, barely noticed. Then the terror began to spread--terror that was to erupt into a national panic as the strange, seemingly purposeful murderous attacks of a new and vicious species of bees began to mount. Against this background, a band of scientists draw upon their knowledge to fight an enemy they only partly comprehend in a desperate race against time. Built around one of man's most haunting fears--that the forces of nature will overrun his defenses and exterminate the human race--The Swarm is a vividly imagined masterpiece of chilling adventure.
