This slapstick postmodern tale is also a profound statement about dictatorship and peaceful revolution, from an award-winning author/illustrator team. The General has ordered that no one can cross the line. The right-hand page must be kept blank for the General! But as the crowd builds up on the border, what will happen to the story? Will the Guard let anyone cross?… (meer)

Indeed, a captivating Portuguese book written by Isabel Minhós Martins and drew by Bernardo Carvalho, what good combination! The focus point for me are the drawings, because they not only added creativity and colorfulness to the book, but it helps to tell a great story. I think that little children would enjoy the most by reading this book, and it has to be read with the drawing showing, as it's an important part of the story to be told. The general it's kind of the bad guy of the book, he tells the guards no to cross the line, so the book is shown divided right in the middle, and one side is full of people of different kind, gender, age, even animals, and the other side of the line is blank as a representation of the boundaries that exist in real life Later, in the book people start wondering why can't they cross the line, and the revolution starts, but they still don't break the rule of the general. Until one moment, the limits are broken when a ball bounced to the blank pages of the book. The people is shocked, but a group of kids cross the line, and the people were calling the guards, to make them realized that they broke the rules. Other people also started to cross the line and realized nothing happens, even after the general showed up. This tale, brings a lot of memories in history, because changes can be good and bad, but definitely revolutionize the world. Younger generations can change the world for good, but sometimes we need to break the rules and manners inflicted by society. ( )

This book was a good example of how powerful illustrations can be in literature. I thought it was very good and how it brought int o effect the idea of breaking down barriers and changing things. This is a very good book to have in a text set to explain the power of illustrations. ( )
