Really fun, quick read, though the technology is dated by it's 1990s origin. ( ) I don't know whether I like this book or not. It's not bad - decently well-written, good characterization, story makes sense. But somehow it never quite transcends its roots. Despite being set in the modern age (well, relatively modern. A 486DX laptop is cutting edge…), and despite several comments from the protagonist about the difference between a 'real' hero and what he's doing, it remains a standard quest save-the-world story, complete with reluctant and underbriefed hero, random allies, and a last-minute save. Jack's coyness about what he figures out as the solution is both annoying and rather silly. He's taking his allies into a major battle, equipping them with odd things for weapons, and not telling them what he has or why? Sheesh. Simon's not the only one with a talent for annoyance. The blatant setting up for the sequel is annoying too. Not bad, but very far from a favorite. Oh - I had read it before, so maybe that's why, but the solution seemed blindingly obvious to me long before Jack figured it out - when he lost the illusion, that was a major clue. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
