Akkoord, er zijn wat kantjes aan Philip Roth die echt wel afstoten: zijn overvloedig, overdadig meanderend en erg intellectualistisch woordgebruik, zijn fixatie op oudere mannen die zonder uitzondering geobsedeerd zijn door seks (al of niet samenhangend met prostraatproblemen), zijn verhakkelde verhaallijnen die geregeld onderbroken worden door de introductie van compleet nieuwe personages met uitgebreide biografische achtergrond, enz. Maar: ik begin stilaan wel erg onder de indruk te komen van hoe diep Roth in de ziel van een personage kan duiken, en hoe hij de menselijke onmacht om echt te weten hoe iets in elkaar steekt (“wat de waarheid is”), of hoe iemand echt is, perfect weet onder woorden te brengen. En wat ook altijd terugkeert: zijn hoofdpersonages bedriegen vooral zichzelf, bouwen hun leven op manifeste of onbewust leugens of ondeugdelijke obsessies. Na vier werken van Roth verorberd te hebben, krijg ik de indruk te maken te hebben met een eind-twintigste eeuwse Balzac. Ook in The Human Stain zitten de typische Roth-ingrediënten, zowel de ergerlijke als de imponerende. Ik ga niet beginnen aan een korte inhoud, want dan geef ik gewoon de plot weg. Laat me volstaan met de vermelding dat het hoofdpersonage een man is die breekt met zijn verleden en volledig uit het niets zijn eigen identiteit opbouwt, maar daar ook aan ten onder gaat. Dit klinkt een beetje als een Griekse tragedie, en dat is niet toevallig, de man is professor klassieke talen. Onderweg geeft Roth staaltjes van stilistisch kunnen ten beste waar maar weinigen aan kunnen tippen. En akkoord, het verhaal rammelt wat (American Pastorale en Sabbath’s Theater staken veel beter in elkaar). Maar met alle voorbehoud ga ik hem onder mijn favoriete auteurs rangschikken. ( )
Een gepensioneerde professor oude talen blijkt een geheim te hebben. Dat komt aan het licht nadat hij is verongelukt met zijn veel jongere vriendin. Hij heeft zijn baan opgezegd nadat hij ten onrechte van racisme is beschuldigd; zijn vrouw overleed in die tijd aan een hartstilstand en hij was dag en nacht met dit onrecht bezig. Totdat hij een vrouw ontmoet die weinig in het leven heeft en er weinig van verwacht en door wie hij de liefde hervindt. De ex van de vrouw, een Vietnamveteraan, rijdt hen van de weg. Door de ontmoeting met de zus van de professor gaat Zuckerman toch het boek over de professor schrijven, zoals die dat indertijd aan hem gevraagd had.
