An insider's account of misogyny and rape in the US military and her extraordinary path to recovery and activism Desperate to realize her childhood dream of being an astronaut, Lynn K. Hall was an enthusiastic young cadet. For Hall, the military offered an escape from her chaotic home--her erratic mother, absent biological father, and a man she called "dad" who sexually abused her. Resolute and committed to the Air Force Academy, Hall survived the ordeals of a first-year cadet: intense hazing from upperclassmen, grueling physical training, and demanding coursework. But she's dismissed from the Academy when, after being raped by an upperclassman and contracting herpes, she is diagnosed with meningitis and left with chronic and debilitating pain. Betrayed by the Academy and overcome with shame, Hall candidly recounts her loss of self, the dissociation from her body and the forfeiture of her individuality as a result of the military's demands and her perpetrator's abuse. Forced to leave the military and return to the civilian world, Hall turns to extreme sports to cope with and overcome PTSD and chronic pain. She, in turn, reclaims herself on the mountain trails of the Colorado Rockies. An intimate account of grappling with shame and a misogynistic culture that condones rape and blames victims, Caged Eyes is also a transformative story of how it's possible to help yourself and others in the aftermath of a profound injustice.… (meer)

With a passion for flying and the dream of becoming an astronaut, Lynn joined the Air Force Academy. During the first year, cadet’s are hazed, undergoing extreme conditions by both upperclassmen and instructors. When Lynn is raped by an upperclassman, she contracts herpes. Diagnosed with meningitis she is in constant pain but, determined to succeed, she pushes through, trying to survive the grueling schedule despite her illness.

This was a gritty, tell-all story. I wanted Lynn to succeed and was rooting her for to overcome the harsh and unfair treatment at the Air Force Academy. I also felt for the other women who had been raped, and cheered as they forced the issue to the forefront. Although the book was heartbreaking, this is a story that needs to be shared. ( )

Excellent book on the aftermath of sexual assault. The writer takes us on her personal journey of injustices beginning at childhood and then throughout her military career. This is not a quick read nor a book to be taken lightly. She's putting herself out there so that we may understand this issue. And frankly, if you are not someone that has been subject to abuse, most likely you haven't put a great deal of thought in to it. Excellent sequenced writing that allows us to see her story as it has unfolded. My only "wish" is that she wouldn't blame herself as I felt she does at times. None of this was her fault. ( )

Not an easy book to read, but full of resilience. Molested as a teenager, Lynn is accepted as a cadet in the air force academy, and then raped by an upperclassman. Not only is she raped, but he gives her herpes that turns into meningitis. Just horrible that no one would listen to her. I can't believe that she pressed on in the academy for so long before basically being hospitalized. What a story. I am glad that she has gotten the help she needed and I hope she is still in a better place in her life. ( )

I read the book with great interest as I have known men who went to the Air Force Academy, although before Lynn hall was a cadet in 2001. I am a native to Colorado where the Air Force Academy is located, so the book held a special interest to me.
I felt the rape while at the academy, and its long term physical and psychological effects, were very real.
I have read other books about rape on college campuses, so I was relieved that Lynn was able to recover from her experience. It gave the reader hope that there is recovery, if we seek help, and travel the long road to recover. She is 30 now and went through many years of therapy to regain her self esteem. Living in Colorado, climbing mountains, and running marathons are truly spiritual. With a loving group of friends she was able to survive and grow into a confident woman. The issue of rape is current and is devastating to the lives of those who are victims. A must read for all who are interested in Social Justice. ( )
