The writing isn't great, and it had been built up a lot over the years, so of course it's hard to live up to that. But then it got its hooks in me, and I couldn't put it down. The plot just catches you and you have to keep reading. It's a great vacation read. Too much melodrama. I tried it on audio, and I tried to read it, and I couldn't justify staying with it. Max is living with her little family Fang,Iggy,Angel,Nudgie and Gasman in a secluded Place in the mountains. She and her friends arent just normal kids but had avian DNA infused in their human DNA making them have wings, superstrength and other bird like traits. Max is the gangs appointed leader ever since Jeb their caretaker vanished. Several years ago they all were saved by him from The School, the lab who created them.. He brought them to their current hideout...but one day he just disappeared. They think he was killed by the Schools enforcers, the Erasers. The Erasers are wolflike and completely without mercy. One of the Schools bad little experiments. When the youngest of Max family, Angel is taken by the Erasers.Max decides to lead the flock to rescue her before does anything bad or worse to the defenseless girl. Maximum Ride is one of those books I have been aware of and seen other people mention as good, but for some reason or other I just havent got around to pick it up. Max reminds me of another genetically engineered quipper -Max from tvseries Dark Angel. That is the YA version. They arent just humans with wings, they actually have birdlike traits and then there is the troubling aspect that they might expire aka die because of their mixed up DNA is not natural. There isnt a romance as such but there are hints of something happening between Max and Fang. Maybe this book is not very Deep, dont get me wrong its not childish what I mean is I had a fun time reading it and time flew (hahaha) as I was turning the pages. Which is not necessarily bad; I keep a fair bit of junk food lit on my list as well as that with deeper meaning. But this doesn't even entertain particularly well--it spends far too much time on angst and new pointless squirrelly plot lines, without bothering to resolve the ones it already has. It's altogether a frustrating read, and the sequels get even worse. Answer any of the confusing plot questions? Why should we, when we can get into author soapboxes and embark on more pointless quests? There's too much vagueness here to allow it to connect to the reader: the world, the plot, and the characters feel horribly generic. Give this one a pass.
3.5 out of 5 stars! I really wasn't sure what to expect at first with this book. But once I got started I couldn't stop! Kind of written with the same type of thing as the Darkest Powers Series, but with quite a few unusual twists! I'll be interested what the next book in the series, "School's Out-Forever", entails. Patterson occasionally forgets his audience here, as evidenced by his sardonic tone and such glib adult asides as "they found their prey: moi," but he's picked a comfortable formula (orphans protecting one another and making a home together), which he's cushioned with an abundance of slavering beasts, childhood heartaches, and unresolved issues... As with Patterson's adult mystery thrillers, in-depth characterization is secondary to the fast-moving plot.
