Superstar writer Mark Waid's run on THE FLASH is now re-collected in a new series of graphic novels, continuing in THE FLASH BY MARK WAID BOOK TWO! Once Wally West was just Kid Flash, sidekick to his mentor and friend the Flash, a.k.a. Barry Allen. The death of Barry left Wally the fastest man alive--and the new Flash. Now, somehow, Barry has returned--as a violent and paranoid speedster determined to eliminate what he's created! Is Barry really back? THE FLASH BY MARK WAID BOOK TWO looks back at Wally's earliest days as the Kid Flash and explores the gamut of his emotions and experiences from his first day as a child hero to his succession of Barry Allen as the new Flash. A journey full of humor and drama, this story shows just how much Wally West loves being the fastest man alive. Collects GREEN LANTERN #30-31 & 40, THE FLASH #69-79, THE FLASH ANNUAL #6, JUSTICE LEAGUE INTERNATIONAL QUARTERLY #10.… (meer)

Waid’s run on The Flash title in the early 90s went a long way to establishing the Wally West incarnation of the Scarlet Speedster as my favorite, and this volume reinforced why.

It showcases Waid’s ability to handle virtually any type of superhero story from high-concept ridiculous (the opening Gorilla Grodd story) to the deeply emotional and personal (The Return of Barry Allen storyline). He is also one of the first writers to examine the practical aspects of being a super speedster - like what does running at that speed in the rain feel like, or how does I man that moves at Mach 3 feel like stood waiting in a slow moving queue at the bank?

While the aforementioned Return of Barry Allen story is the focus of this collection, the one story that stood out to me was a short eight-pager of The Flash trapped in a glass elevator witnessing a distant assassination attempt and watching, from his perspective, the slow moving bullet head towards its target apparently unable to stop it. It's ok, but I really don't seem to click with the Flash. Once again we get a story that seems to be cut off here and there, probably because it was a crossovers btw 3-4 titles and we only get stories from 2 here. ( )
