A sprite is not your typical 'pet', and so caring and feeding a sprite is not something a typical pet owner may know about. But the first thing you have to have, the most important thing you must possess, when caring for a sprite is the sight to see your sprite. Otherwise you may as well just hang an empty cage, claim to possess a sprite and be done with the whole thing, because really who would know? But if you do possess the sight and have a sprite flitting about your home that you wish to care for, then this is the book for you.

Care And Feeding Of Sprites delves into enclosures, appetites, habits and the awkward question of asking your sprite what gender they are, a question that should really be avoided because really what business is it of yours anyway. A 'pet' that is growing ever more popular amongst the sighted, and strangely the unsighted, this invaluable book offers all you would need to know about the care and feeding of these delicate and conniving creatures. But be forewarned, caring for sprites is not for the faint hearted, hot tempered or unadvised as sprites have been known to bite. ( )

I was pretty unenthusiastic about some of the art in this book. I know they are fairies, but why do they have to look like half dressed seductive little slut bugs? And really? You had to call deciding the sprite's gender "sexing your sprite?" The first time I read it I misread it as "sexting your sprite". I can just imagine little preteens snickering over that. It was that page, along with the illustration that made me decide I wasn't going to bother bringing it home from the library for my 7 year old girl and her 5 year old brother. It says you can tell the gender of the sprite by the shape of their antennas, but then there is a sprite that looks like she has female anatomy. She is just hanging out like she's ready for her vaginal exam. Honestly, I don't think my kids would even give all of that a second thought. They are pretty innocent minded. I sure felt uncomfortable though. ( )

A fun supplementary book to the Spiderwick series, this fictional animal guide offers detailed instructions on how to care for captive sprites. Since the Spiderwick series operates under the premise that all the events described in the stories are true, the author and publisher duo created a couple of books to further this illusion. The first one was a supposed replica of a field guide for fairy creatures, the same one that started all the adventures for the Grace children, and it was a lovely picture book. The illustrations were gorgeous, as expected of illustrator Diterlizzi, and the mock field guide format was humorous and captivating. This book is similar to the field guide, but on a smaller scale and with a more narrow focus. Apparently, Simon Grace has taken to the hobby of capturing and caring for sprites as if they are pets (another extension of his love for animals). His actions have started a fad, the International Sprite League, and they have compiled guidelines on how to care for these capricious creatures. He sent their notes to Black and Diterlizzi, asking them to spruce them up and get them published, so that others can be careful in this dangerous past time.

The book begins with the letter from Simon to the authors, establishing the reason for the book's existence. Black and Diterlizzi include a note of their own to readers, intimating that they aren't sure about the wisdom of this practice. Heh. The field guide consists of small sections exploring different areas of sprite rearing: anatomy, selecting the right one, feeding, bathing, home care, illnesses, and so on. Each section is accompanied by a full page illustration of a different sprite, with a key identifying their traits and preferences (such as biting, singing, or stealing infants). Some illustrations include detailed magnifications of antennae and other appendages. The book presents the information in all seriousness, yet with wonderful tongue-in-cheek touches that remind the reader that this is a silly romp into the imagination. I love books like this - field guides to supernatural creatures - and would have been beside myself to have it as a child. The Sprite guide is not as amazing as the field guide, which has a broader scope and far more animals, but it was still a cute read. ( )

Beautiful illustrations, good design, amusing writing; over all a fun read (if an adult is allowed to say that about a pictures book :) ) ( )
