Born December 25, Noel Beebe is tired of having his birthday overshadowed by all things Christmas. While looking for love on social media, he comes across a prospective new beau just in time to celebrate the Big 3-0, someone who encourages him to take back his day and say thumbs down to Christmas! On a trip to the Big Apple, Noel does just that, flipping off the Rockefeller Center tree and demanding his coffee in a nondecorative paper cup as a fun birthday prank. His act of defiance is caught on video and soon goes viral, leading to a backlash all over the Twitterverse, Internet, and TV. Suddenly what Noel thought would be his best birthday--and even Christmas--yet is shaping up to be his worst. Can his family and his potential boyfriend prove to the world that Noel isn't the Scrooge he's been labeled? A story from the Dreamspinner Press 2016 Advent Calendar "Bah Humbug."… (meer)

Living life on social media, with all its risks and pitfalls, has become a part of modern life. Some people are more exposed than others, but this story shows what can go wrong even if you’re not necessarily looking for “viral fame”. It also has to be said that crazy hashtags are a feature of Noel’s life even before the disastrous Rockefeller incident that gets him into trouble all over cyberspace – so what happens shouldn’t be a total shock to him.

Noel is one of the unlucky people born on Christmas day, and he has hated that fact all his life. As a child I can see how it would interfere with his “big day”, but as an adult I would have thought he’d get over it at some point. Since he is now turning thirty and is still “complaining”, clearly there is some residual resentment he has to deal with. Unfortunately, his act of defiance is made public and he needs all the help he can get to deal with the consequences.

Help comes from a (for me) totally unexpected direction, so I am not going to say too much about it. The surprise worked well for me, and the way Noel ends up being saved was very satisfying and the guy is super cute. What I will say is that the cast of characters, both the helpful and the not-so-helpful people, is fantastic. There are seven siblings, some of whom butt into Noel’s business, as siblings do, and made me laugh. There is an equally hashtag-challenged guy Noel thinks of as a potential boyfriend for a while, and the way he deals with his “issue” is the source of much hilarity. There are other Internet-based friends and acquaintances… all in all, each of them contributed to making Noel’s story, as funny as it was, feel very real.

If you like Christmas stories set firmly in today’s world - Internet issues included, if you think that meeting “Mr. Right” via social media has certain risks but can also be rewarding, and if you’re looking for a thoroughly entertaining read and/or need a laugh, then you might like this novella.

If I had to sum up my feelings about this short story in one word, it would be "meh." The premise is good - Noel was born on Christmas day, and he resents having to share his birthday with the major holiday every year. And then it just morphed into something else entirely along the way.

First off - Noel and Ethan. What. I never really got why Ethan was in the picture at all - he didn't add anything to the story at all except filler. He was rude and only messaged Noel when he wanted something or wanted to talk about his impending stardom. Yawn. It feels like the only reason he was placed in the story at all was that he made Noel go viral for "hating" Christmas.

And see, Noel didn't REALLY hate Christmas; in fact, he liked it very much. But Ethan pushed him into joking around and flipping off a Christmas tree and stuff, and then Ethan posted the videos and pictures to Twitter, and it snowballed into the ridiculous "War on Christmas" bullshit that conservatives like to spout around this time of the year - made even more hilarious that most "Christmas" traditions are actually pagan in origin. But I digress.

And then there was Bart, the guy whom Noel had met on Twitter several months ago and had ghosted on him, breaking Noel's heart in the process, even though they had never met. And, finally, we have Hung, who is Chinese and born on St. Patrick's Day, so he shares some of Noel's my-birthday-is-on-a-holiday angst.

Hung and Bart are the same person, by the way, which felt creepy as hell.

The story felt choppy and without real direction. I just didn't enjoy it. And the "romance" in the story didn't feel genuine to me at all. I hate to say it, but I'm not a fan. ( )
