The U.S. tax code is a total write-off. Crammed with loopholes and special interest provisions, it works for no one except tax lawyers, accountants, and huge corporations. Not for the first time, we have reached a breaking point-- in fact, we reach one every thirty-two years. T.R. Reid crisscrosses the globe in search of exact solutions to the urgent tax problems of the United States. With an uncanny knack for making a complex subjects not just accessible but gripping, he investigates what makes good taxation (no, that's not an oxymoron) and brings that knowledge home where it is needed most. Reid presses the case for sensible root-and-branch reforms that will affect everyone. Doing our taxes will never be America's favorite pastime, but it can and should be so much easier and fairer. --… (meer)

I never thought I’d read a whole book about tax policy, but this wasn’t too bad. Written very simply and directly, it gives some history of taxation around the world and especially in America, with a broad overview of how our tax system works and how it could be improved, especially by emulating practices that have worked well in other countries. From a center-left POV in general, but I think it’s pretty fair to mainstream viewpoints on all sides. ( )

This is an ideal book to read during the tax season since it compares the US tax system with the tax systems of other countries. Of course, finding out that some one in the Netherlands usually only needs 15 minutes to do their taxes will leave Americans rather frustrated. The book succeeds in making an important topic, albeit dry, interesting and even absorbing. ( )

A surprisingly engaging book about tax policy and what can be done about our tax code. It's very timely and up-t0-date (written this year) and I learned lots of useful tidbits, like what the VAT really is and that California offers a service that lets you file taxes for free automatically (CalFile!). It also made me laugh out loud in a few places. I'll probably check out other books by this author in the future. ( )
