A man returns to the Vale of York, having made good in the outside world and now planning his retirement in a derelict house which he has bought and is renovating. When the time comes to clear the land around the house, he comes upon a skeleton buried in a pile of rubble; it turns out to be the body of a woman reported missing some 19 years earlier, from the very same house. DCI Hennessey and DS Yellich investigate, linking the skeleton to the disappearance of several other people over the years, the only commonality being a possible gold-digger who may indeed still be operating all these years later….This is the seventh Hennessey and Yellich novel and, like its predecessors, it’s notable for the strong sense of place and the economy of story-telling; Mr. Turnbull has a knack for creating memorable and likable characters, plots with many moving parts and a style of writing that shows the reader the events as they occur and then leaves it to him/her to ponder deeper meanings. The stories are framed in daily increments, each book covering approximately one week over the course of which a crime is discovered, investigated and solved. I really love this series, but have had difficulty finding all of the books in sequence; here’s hoping I find the next one soon! Recommended! ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The horizon doesn't always mark the end of the road . . . When Francis Armstrong moves into his fussily designed Victorian house in the heart of the Vale of York, his August stretches before him in a haze of leisurely house refurbishments. His decision to move a pile of rubble, however, brings DCI Hennessey and Sergeant Yellich springing to the scene at the double. The woman's skeleton they study alongside Louise D'Acre, the lovely pathologist, points the finger of blame firmly and soon all the roads of evidence are leading in one direction. But once that destination is reached, the road continues onwards beyond that point, to a doorstep that makes no attempt to conceal its horrific crimes, but brags of them.
