I finally sat down and read through this tremendously important book instead of just using it spottily for reference, and I sure wish I hadn't waited so long. It's a tour de force, and the additional notes and material by Barker and Collins, plus the later epilogue by Carter and Pollard, adds much to the narrative. ( )
Much of Messrs. Carter and Pollard's space is devoted to explaining the method and the steps of their investigtion. Their pages are exciting and fascinating, but must not detain us here beyond a brief summary. The tests of the suspected material fell under two main heads: analysis of paper, and examination of the types employed. By these methods the authors have conclusively proved, to the present writer at least, that twenty-two of Mr. Gorfin's pamphlet's could not, from the chemical composition of the paper on which they are printed, have come into existence until years after the date they bear. Equally it is shown, by the evidence of the types employed, and by other researches, and least sixteen pamphlets dated from 1842 to 1873 must in fact have been printed after 1880, and that in all probability some fifty suspect pamphlets, despite imprints and title-page inscriptions asserting in some cases a widely different provenance, were printed by the firm of R. Clay & Sons. ... The collaborators have accomplished a difficult task with wit as well as scientific thoroughness; and by skilful presentation of their case have provided an interest of suspense which invests this essay in bibliography with the fascination of the detective story and the crossword puzzle, as well as the more sober and serious attractions of utility and truth.
