I thought I'd read this book before; certainly some of the characters seemed familiar. In Neopolis, everyone has superpowers. The top 10 are the superhero cops of Precinct 10. So this book is an engaging combination of superhero silliness and beat cops, with a dash of Judge Dredd madness of the city. It's a lot of fun, and Gene Ha slips all sorts of visual jokes into the city background. I particuluarly liked the way the characters were perpetually kept busy with leads on several cases and other distractions. Even if you haven't read one of his comics, you are probably familiar with Alan Moore from movies based on his work: Watchmen, V for Vendetta and the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. With any luck, Top 10 will make it to the big screen. The floppies were published by DC's America's Best imprint in the late 90s early 2000s, and the trade paperback compilation of these floppies was released last year by DC's Vertigo imprint. Top 10 gives us a world--multiple worlds, actually--where super powers and alien life forms are so common as to appear mundane. Talking animals in robotic prosthetics, alien porn stars, gods of ancient mythology getting loaded at the local bar and flabby 70 something year-olds walking around in spandex vigilante suits all serve to strip away the mystique of our modern superhero genre. Although the setting is pure science fiction, the story focuses on the daily grind of police work in the 10th precinct of Neopolis; a precinct riddled by petty crime, drug addiction and prostitution. Like a really good television police drama, Top 10 has multiple interconnected story-lines and has an ensemble of characters who can go from petty squabbling to fiercely defending each others lives before its time for their first coffee break of the day. This is a book that invites multiple readings, not only because it skewers assumptions about superheroes and raises large, philosophical questions, but also because it is impossible to take in all of the pop cultural references pencil artist Gene Ha has packed into each page. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

The massive, multilayered city of Neopolis, built shortly after World War II, was designed as a home for the expanding population of science-heroes, heroines and villains that had ballooned into existence in the previous decade. In 1985 the city accepted jurisdiction by a police force covering many alternate Earths, headquartered on the world known as Grand Central. Our own outpost of this network, Precinct Ten (known affectionately as Top 10), recruits its members from Neopolis and its environs, working much like Earth's other police precincts, with one major exception: Like the citizens of the city, the officers of Top 10 have the abilities needed to deal with Neopolis's exotic denizens. Rookie cop Robyn Slinger, alter ego "Toybox," hits the streets for the first time along with a colorful crew of fellow officers, each having the required training to deal with science-villains and super-crimes, as well as the common misdemeanors of city life. You'll never look at powers, or police work, the same way again! From Alan Moore, the writer of WATCHMEN and V FOR VENDETTA, and artists Gene Ha (JUSTICE LEAGUE) and Zander Cannon (Transformers), the Eisner award-winning series TOP 10 is collected here in its entirety!. While there is an overarching plot, Moore takes us on a number of detours that only add to the fun. The battle between the superpowered mice and cats and Ex-Verminator's consequent woes are probably my favorite scenes.
I thought the story developed a little too slowly, but once we get out of the opening scenes, things start rolling along nicely.
Gene Ha's artwork is incredibly detailed, and nearly every panel is filled with snarky details and references. His character drawings come across as a bit stiff, but it doesn't detract much from the visuals.
All in all, this is a graphic you'll be rereading numerous times. ( )
