This was an adorable science fiction of how a young boy and his bear friend help an alien baby find its way home. One night a young boy (Tinker) and his bear friend (Tom) gaze at the sky. A small shining object streaked across the sky into their backyard. They see that the object in their backyard is actually a spaceship. Inside the spaceship is a baby. Tinker and Tom help the baby get his spaceship back into space. The author uses the genre of science fiction to allow the reader to imagine themselves as the normal boy in the story, while also imagining themselves interacting with futuristic babies.. I would use this story to introduce the genre of science fiction to my students. ( )

This was a fun kids explanation of a shooting star. It was them helping this baby star find his mama. The pictures were very cute and they went along with the story very well. I thought the illustrator got in touch with their inner child when creating the star baby character. ( )

Tinker and Tom are at home watching the stars when they see a baby dressed as a star land in the backyard. They decide to help the baby star get home, they then try to make new rocket fuel for the baby. At the end, they don’t want to let the baby go home but let him leave anyway and they help the baby by giving a push and sending him off into space.
This book is a great modern fantasy book because it gives children the opportunity to develop their imagination. Parts of the plot are grounded in reality but are exaggerated or not plausible. In the book there is gravitational pull from the baby messing up the kitchen, which is a concept that children will kind of understand. Gravity not fantasy but the fact that the baby dressed as a star will have it’s own pull is clearly fantasy. There’s a baby in a rocket, which is real technology yet the baby is a star and there is also a talking bear with the main character. This helps children “readily believe” as the textbook mentions.
This book is a great animal fantasy book mixed with realistic groundwork; it is a great book to introduce children to fantasy. The fact that there is a baby dressed as a star, which came from outer space, would really intrigue children and be astonished by the concept. The concept of a space baby and outer space influences will also appeal to the children reading this book. The fact that the baby star lands in the backyard of the child and his talking bear and then they try to “make more rocket fuel” with simple household items. It is a no brainer for a child to use logic to help someone else so I think children will relate with the main character and his helpfulness. ( )

Review: This book is a great example of science fiction because it incorporates imaginative characters and settings, but bridges the gap of disbelief by using the possibilities of science. Tinker and Tom, a boy and a bear, find a Star Baby in their backyard and try to fix its spaceship so that it can return to its mother.
