"This entertaining and enlightening graphic narrative tells the exciting story of the seventeenth-century thinkers who challenged authority--sometimes risking excommunication, prison, and even death--to lay the foundations of modern philosophy and science and help usher in a new world...Heretics! tells the story of their ideas, lives, and times in a vivid new way. Crisscrossing Europe as it follows them in their travels and exiles, the narrative describes their meetings and clashes with each other--as well as their confrontations with religious and royal authority. It recounts key moments in the history of modern philosophy, including the burning of Giordano Bruno for heresy, Galileo's house arrest for defending Copernicanism, Descartes's proclaiming cogito ergo sum, Hobbes's vision of the "nasty and brutish" state of nature, and Spinoza's shocking Theological-Political Treatise." -- Publisher's description.… (meer)

This is the third philosophy comic book I've read now, so you can say I'm a little obsessed with reading comic books about philosophy. Besides reading the philosopher themselves, this form of media is the best way for me to learn about the topic. Maybe it's because they explain it in pictures rather than using complicated words. However, out of the three book I have, I think this one was the hardest to read, probably because it written by a philosophy professor rather than your average comic book Joe.

This book only focus on European philosophers for 1633-1755. If you're looking for men in togas or Existentialist, look elsewhere. In some ways I like that this book is more focused with an idea compared to the others like this book. The other two comics were more mixed with what they talked about and who they talked about. However, this makes the book a little hard to get into if your looking for an into to philosophy. At times, I feel like you need to know who these philosopher are before hand. I had an easy time reading about Descartes because I've read his works and about him several times, but Locke got a little confusing to me because I've only read him in school and forgotten most of what I learned.

There were some philosopher in this I didn't even know or forgotten about. That's always a plus in my reviews if I learn about someone new or relearn. They briefly talk about Elisabeth of Bohemia whom I know of from reading Descartes obviously, but I knew nothing about her. Even though her part was brief, I wish to know more about her. She seems like an underrated female philosopher. This book also features a woman named Anne Conway, who I didn't know about at all, but again wish there was more about her too. Only issue I run into these philosophy books is there is a lack of women in this field.

I really liked the art in this book. It's kid of simple at times, but it works for educational comics. I like how he draws animals and buildings. He's detailed with those the most. I hope to see more of Ben Nadler's art. ( )

Heretics! by Steven Nadler and Ben Nadler covers some of the history of modern Western philosophy beginning with Galileo and cleverly linking up philosophers and interweaving them until it finishes with Newton. I liked how the book flowed chronologically so that you can easily see how one philosopher influenced another. Philosophy is a heavy topic and I did slow down from time to time in order to understand some of this, but the author is very good at introducing the subject in small doses with simple, not too detailed drwings so that it isn't too difficult to follow. A good basic introduction to these philosophers and their beliefs. ( )
