In addition to the ordinary problems of a Puerto Rican teenager in Brooklyn, Sierra Santiago is working on developing her shadowshaping skills, and she is beginning to think she may need all the skill she can summon because it seems that when she channeled hundreds of spirits through herself in order to defeat Wick she woke up something very powerful and very unfriendly and put her family and friends at risk.… (meer)

Such a delightful series. Recommended to my few friends with kids in particular. I checked out the audio too and it's very well done.
(I've been stockpiling books for my nephew for different reading levels, but there's no reason for adults not to read and enjoy this series. Especially those needing clear but not condescending insight into a lot of the issues we've been discussing.) ( )

I loved the first book in this series. The sequel is weaker. One of the aspects of the first book I liked was that the themes of gentrification and cultural appropriation were present, but not heavy-handed. There are parts of Shadowhouse Fall that turn it up to eleven, foregrounding the politics instead of the story. (Of course, discourse about race, feminism, cultural appropriation, etc, entirely belong in sf/f, the genre is worthless without it.) Also I found it hard to keep track of all the characters, perhaps because it's been a while since I read the first book.

Looking forward to the next one. ( )

Now that Sierra has become Lucera, a powerful person in the shadowhunters group, she and her friends are training and hoping to catch a breather. But she soon finds out that the Sorrows are moving against them and the Deck of Worlds - whatever that might mean - is back in play.

Not quite as compelling for me as book 1, but still a fun and inventive fantasy set in urban New York with a diverse set of characters. A solid recommendation for teen fantasy readers, and I look forward to seeing how the series finishes. ( )

Narrated by Anika Noni Rose. Hmmm, I wasn't as enamored of this compared to the first book. Events felt scattered and random and Sierra's conflicted and conflicting attractions to Robbie and Pulpo didn't work for me.
