It’s hard to write a review of such a heartfelt story without reaching for cliches. I found the MC, Murana Bill, to be a tragic figure at first. She deals with the loss of her parents, becomes essentially a single mom to her younger brother and then nurses him when he returns from the Vietnam War with battle fatigue, or PTSD. He doesn’t speak but has a tremendous appetite, which she feeds by endlessly cooking meals and preparing foods for him. Later, however, Murana finds friendship in the character of Lucille. Their relationship is so well written and beautiful. Unfortunately, this is not a happy read. It’s full of tragedy and sadness. Yet, in a way, it’s more about learning how to move on and embrace life and happiness as well. This was a random find at a local used bookstore and I’m glad I stumbled on it.
