( ) This is something of a genre bender, a blend of psychological thriller, domestic drama, YA contemporary/coming of age, and police procedural. I read the first book in this series last month, and I enjoyed both. These are more nuanced than a quick flash in the pan style thriller (and I love those too) but here I found plenty to think about after finishing the book, including the experience of the Somalian refugee and immigrant communities in the UK. Content warning: terminal illness in a child. I would suggest reading book 1 of the series first mainly to get a sense of the detective’s journey and growth, although this is a completely new case and storyline. Best friends Noah Sadler and Abdi Mahad have always been inseparable. But when Noah is found floating unconscious in Bristol's Feeder Canal, Abdi can't--or won't--tell anyone what happened. Noah is British. Abdi is a Somali refugee. Social tensions have been rising rapidly in Bristol UK. Against this background of fear and fury two families fight for their sons and for the truth. Neither of them know how far they will have to go, what demons they will have to face, what pain they will have to suffer. The book is told from multiple POVs and the plot is slowly laid out as you watch how their friendship got to this place. I'm looking forward to Gilly's next book as I enjoyed her writing.
