338. With Napoleon in Russia The Memoirs of General de Caulaincourt, Duke of Vicenza (read 10 Feb 1948) I was taking Father Green's class "French Revolution and Napoleon" and this was a book he suggested be read. It is an account of the invasion of Russia in 1812. Not a happy time for the author. ( )

I venture to assert that during this journey the Emperor was kind enough to hear me without taking offence; and I say once again that I was able to convince myself, from the nature and frankness of his conversation; that one could lay many claims to his confidence who could lay none to his favour.
