I've been fan of Bernlef for some time, although I didn't read many of his books yet (only 4, I think), but also still have 3 unread on my shelves. Books that shouldn't be read in a row, as they can be quite depressing and it will ruin the mystical touch of his work. I enjoyed this book, although that might not be the right word for it. To not spoil the story, I won't tell a lot about the plot. Arend Wijtman all of a sudden takes a week of and travels to an island. He stays in a small hotel and wanders around the island. In the time he's there, a eleven-year old girl goes missing. Only the reader gets an almost complete view on what's going on. The characters in the book only parts and tend to draw wrong conclusions. The book breaths the atmosphere of loneliness. It feels cold and distant. And again Bernlef uses a protagonist who loses a part of himself. Typical for this author. http://boekenwijs.blogspot.com/2011/09/meeuwen.html geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

This must be one of Bernlef's best novels. ( )
