Ik weet niet zo goed wat ik van dit boek moet denken. Deel 1 vond ik goed, maar niet speciaal en dat is bij dit deel eigenlijk hetzelfde. Misschien is de Russisch setting niet zo aan mij besteed. In ieder geval merkte ik dat ik het boek makkelijk weg kon leggen en dat ik er ook niet aan moest denken als ik iets anders aan het doen was. Jammer eigenlijk. ( )

Het Meisje in de Toren is het sprookjesachtige vervolg op Katherine Ardens De Beer en de Nachtegaal. Vasilisa groeide op aan de rand van de Russische wildernis, waar de sneeuw zich huizenhoog ophoopte en waar er waarheid school in de sprookjes die rond het vuur werden verteld. Vasilisa's gave om te zien wat anderen niet zien trok de aandacht van Morozko – Vorst, de winterdemon uit de verhalen – en samen redden zij Vasilisa's volk van de ondergang. Maar omdat ze anders is dan de anderen, wordt ze door haar eigen mensen voor heks uitgemaakt. Na te zijn weggejaagd uit haar huis heeft Vasilisa nog maar twee opties: trouwen of het klooster in. Een onmogelijke keuze, en dus kiest ze voor het avontuur. Verkleed als jongen trekt ze eropuit op haar schitterende hengst Solovey. Als Vasilisa echter een stel bandieten te slim af is, verandert alles. De grootvorst van Moskou roemt haar heldendaden, en plots wordt Vasilisa weer herenigd met haar zus en broer, die nu deel uitmaken van de vriendenkring van de vorst.
