Captain Roskill has long been recognised as the leading authority on The Royal Navy s part in the Second World War. His official History (originally published for the HMSO) is unlikely even to be superceded. His narrative is highly readable and the analysis is clear. Roskill describes sea battles, convoy actions and the contribution made by technology in the shape of Asdic & Radar. This is where one begins a serious study of the Commonwealth's war at sea. While there's no mention of the results of Ultra or the other intelligence successes, the text is clear, the Orders of Battle are relatively complete, and the maps are excellent. Capt. Roskill, who commanded HMNZS Leander at the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay, does his best to describe the efforts of the Royal and Allied Navies and succeeds in doing so. (A three volume set) Read twice. ( )
