I'm a huge fan of Sara B Elfgren's work with Mats Strandberg, the Engelsfors trilogy ([b:The Circle|18114365|The Circle (Engelsfors Trilogy, Book 1)|Sara Bergmark Elfgren|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1387173901l/18114365._SX50_.jpg|15929926], [b:Fire|25690974|Fire (The Engelsfors Trilogy #2)|Sara Bergmark Elfgren|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1433809198l/25690974._SY75_.jpg|18933452], [b:The Key|22571826|The Key (The Engelsfors Trilogy, #3)|Mats Strandberg|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1442014726l/22571826._SX50_.jpg|19695489]) which I cannot recommend enough. So I had quite high expectations for this one and I was delighted by the mythological storytelling and Karl Johnsson's gorgeous artwork and colouring. ( ) Surprisingly, this was more the book than the reader. I didn't like the artwork in this one. Reminded me of Sword Princess Althea, where it makes the males look more feminine and females more masculine and has them acting that way as well. The nudity was equal opportunity, (both female and male were shown in full frontal nudity instead of just the female) though the nudity was completely gratuitous. All of this was a real turn off. POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD As to the plot: two sets of deities are fighting over who gets to rule a small piece of the world. And the one, Jotun, use humans or nearly human warriors to fight the Æsir, or the Asgard. Simple plot, no big deal. The characters are flat and don't have a lot of depth and some are really annoying and pointless. Yes, this is supposed to be a re-imagining of the Norse mythos but not really.
"In the midst of a bloody battle between giants, Asgardian gods, and humans, deceit and betrayal run wild. One warrior must fight to discover who she can trust and beat the odds to determine the ultimate fate of her people. She trained her whole life to become the strongest warrior of Jotunheim, to become the beloved champion of her gods. But when the time came to finally prove her strength, Vei was cast into the sea by the very god she fought for. Rescued by a Viking ship, Vei returns to Jotunheim, home of the legendary giants. There she finds herself caught in the Meistarileikir, a bloody game between the humans, the giants, and the gods of Asgard that will determine who will have the right to rule the land of Midgard. Having lost the confidence of her own god, Vei must take her place in the Meistarileikir and fight not only for the control of Midgard, but for her very life, in this epic battle against daring warriors, fearsome monsters, and even the gods themselves."--Provided by publisher.
