Nevermore... Eager to start their life together, historian Vickie Preston and Special Agent Griffin Pryce take a detour en route to their new home in Virginia and stop for a visit in Baltimore. But their romantic weekend is interrupted when a popular author is found dead in the basement of an Edgar Allan Poe-themed restaurant. Because of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the corpse, the FBI's Krewe of Hunters paranormal team is invited to investigate. As more bizarre deaths occur, Vickie and Griffin are drawn into a case that has disturbing echoes of Poe's great works, bringing the horrors of his fiction to life. The restaurant is headquarters to scholars and fans, and any of them could be a merciless killer. Except there's also something reaching out from beyond the grave. The late, great Edgar Allan Poe himself is appearing to Vickie in dreams and visions with cryptic information about the murders. Unless they can uncover whose twisted mind is orchestrating the dramatic re-creations, Vickie and Griffin's future as a couple might never begin...… (meer)

I've long been a fan of the Krewe of Hunters, so I was chuffed to get a copy of this book.
And while I enjoyed it, it was a bit of a quirky departure from what I am used to - perhaps it is because Poe is such a well-known author that his ghostly presence distracted from the mystery at hand.

Still, it was tightly paced, humorous and tense at turns, and I enjoyed it immensely. ( )

Wicked Deeds is the third Krewe of Hunters book to feature Vickie Preston and Griffin Pryce as the leads and the twenty-third book in the series.

Vickie has been accepted into Quantico to get that required FBI training before she joins the Krewe of Hunters. She and Griffin are trying to have a little time together in Baltimore before she starts. Vickie has several of her psychic dreams in this book, all of them having to do with Edgar Allan Poe. Poe's ghost is also a character.

If you're fans of Adam Harrison, the ghost of his son, Josh; Jackson Crow, his wife, Angela Hawkins; and the ghosts of Dylan Ballantine and Darlene Dutton, they're all here.

The murder victims are all Poe fans. The first one is a popular author who writes in several genres, one of them science fiction. His name was Franklin Verne. (No one has the bad taste to joke about Jules Verne.) Franklin's widow, Monica, insists her husband was murdered. Luckily for her, she's Adam Harrison's friend. Unluckily for the second victim, that murder can't possibly be passed off as a suicide. The discovery of the body makes a good scene, though.

The murders take place at a Poe fan's restaurant, The Black Bird. Owner Gary Frampton is very upset. His beautiful daughter, Alice, isn't as upset as her father. Two employees of the restaurant who make the book's cast list are handsome waiter Jon Skye and gift shop manager Lacey Shaw.

Three members of the Blackbird Society, a Poe appreciation group, as Ms. Graham puts it instead of 'fan club', are also part of the cast. Brent Whaley, another writer, is a friend of Verne's. Alistair Malcolm is a Poe expert. Liza Harcourt is a wealthy widow. She's a snob, a shrew, and fancies her very slight psychic gift makes her a genuine medium. I got a lot of chuckles out of Poe's comments about her seance attempts.

After the second murder, the action moves to historic Frampton Manor. Gary and Alice are all that's left of the family. He appreciates the place more than she does. Trying to discover the killer among those present isn't going to be easy, especially when another victim is chosen.

CHAPTER NOTES (mentions will be listed at the end of each chapter):

Chapter 1:

a. See book 21, Dying Breath, for the case involving the serial killer. See book 22, Dark Rites for the case with the cult.

b. The Black Bird restaurant is described.

c. Mentions: Fort McHenry, Federal Hill, Lurch of 'The Addams Family', and 'Beam me up, Scotty!' [from the original 'Star Trek' TV series].

Chapter 2:

a. If you've never read Poe's 'The Cask of Amontillado,' there's a major spoiler for it here.

b. There's also some biographical information about Poe.

c. Mentions: Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger, Prince, Peter Lorre and Vincent Price in the 1963 movie, 'The Raven' and John Cusack playing Poe in ['The Raven', a 2012 movie.] There's a big spoiler for the Cusack movie.

Chapter 4 Mentions: Nick and Nora (the Thin Man movie series), Shakespeare, Dickens, Cotton Mather [Vickie wrote a piece about him], and Fortunato.

Chapter 5:

a. What the American expression 'Guard-a-loo' came from is given here.

b. Mentions: 'The Walking Dead' TV series and Poe's 'The Tell-Tale Heart'.

Chapter 6 Mentions: Oscar Wilde and 'The Tell-Tale Heart'.

Chapter 7 Mentions: Shakespeare (the line is from 'Hamlet') and 'The Tell-Tale Heart'.

Chapter 8 Mentions: Stephen King, J. K. Rowling, James Patterson, Nora Roberts, and Rufus Wilmot Griswold.

Chapter 9 Mention: 'Ghostbusters'

Chapter 10:

a. Frampton Manor is described and some of its history given. (The Antonio Baldi who sculpted the marble statues is not to be confused with the real-life painter and engraver.)

b. Mentions: Poe's 'The Fall of the House of Usher', Sons of the American Revolution, John Adams and John Hancock (Vickie wrote an article about them), the opening line of 'The Star-Spangled Banner', George Washington, John Wilkes Booth, the Underground Railroad, Elliot Ness and the Untouchables; and Shakespeare's Juliet and Ophelia.

Chapter 11 Mentions: The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, The Ghost in the Machine, 'Beetlejuice,' 'The Ghost and Mrs. Muir', Ghost Story by Peter Straub, and actor Red Buttons.'

Chapter 12 Mentions: theories about Poe's death.

Chapter 13 Mentions: Poe's Ligeia, 'The Mystery of Marie Rogêt,' Marie Celia Rogers (on whose murder he based the story), and Lenore.

Chapter 16 Mentions: 'The Cask of Amontillado', Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key, 'The Star-Spangled Banner', The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Moby Dick by Herman Melville, Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman, Henry David Thoreau, and 'Lilies Cut From Life' by Walter Randolph (a fictional Poe wannabe); 'The Fall of the House of Usher', and Duncan Phyfe.

Chapter 17 Mentions: James Fenimore Cooper, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau.

Chapter 18 has a description of Griffin's apartment in Alexandria.

There are some nicely spooky scenes and I appreciated the information about Poe's death. For further information about Poe as amateur detective, I recommend Poe the detective; the curious circumstances behind The mystery of Marie Roget by John Evangelist Walsh.

Poe the ghost was fine up until his final appearance in the last chapter. (It was his compliment about Vickie that made me cringe a little.) I think I shall have to check out the two earlier books with Vickie and Griffin. ( )

This book started out slow...very slow. However I eventually got into it and was glad that I kept with it.

Of course, I’ve heard of Poe, heard some of his poems, and can even imagine his profile. But, I had never read him. Alas, I learned a lot about him in this book as he appeared to Griffin and Vickie, the latter being a new member to the Krewe team. Poe appears to both of them in this story with Vickie being the main person he speaks to.

A member of a group of Poe fans is found dead and that starts the mystery of this book.

I enjoyed reading this book and stayed up late to discover “who did it”. However it doesn’t rank as my favorite from this author.

Entertaining, but slow for me to start.

Thanks to Harlequin, MIRA and Net Galley for providing me with a free e-galley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review ( )

Abandoned. I think I'm not the target audience for this one. I loved the idea of a mystery set in Baltimore involving Edgar Allan Poe, but when the detective spent more time talking to his ghost than detecting, it was too strange for me. I read over half the book and simply could not get into it. I have not read earlier installments. I received an advance e-galley from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
