The structure of this book is interesting - mainly told from the perspective of Ellen, a lawyer asked to represent Paul who fears he is about to be accused of involvement in the disappearance of a woman he works with (and maybe is also sleeping with), and whose sister Charlotte then also goes missing. However, there are chapters from the novel Charlotte was writing and which she gave Ellen to read, which may or may not reflect real life. Then about 2/3 of the way through chapters from the perspective of Charlotte's murderer start, and these revisit (and at times repeat) scenes experienced through Ellen's eyes. I felt his chapters started surprisingly early in the novel, and the repetitions could have been handled better.

However, I liked the writing, and it was well-plotted, although there was one big loose end left untied -

SPOILER

what happened to the first missing woman? Did Paul have something to do with it? ( )

Better than average. Quick read mystery. I really enjoyed the book. I honestly didn't know what direction the story was going to go in. The book broke the mystery genre formula a few times. It is about a sister that goes missing and her family's efforts to find her. The story is told from 3 different points of view. The third person's point of view comes 60% in the book and that is rather jarring.

The blurbs about the book lures you in by saying that the central character, Ella, has a secret past time, however, there is only one scene with Ella's alter ego, Cassidy. It would have been interesting if this was explored more.

There are a few continuity errors in time and place that took me out of the story. ( )

Meet Ella, an attorney by day and at night she lives a secret life pursuing music. One day she gets a call that her younger sister, Charlotte, has gone missing. Any clues that were left behind reside in a draft of the 1st part of a novel Charlotte was writing, which seems to be based on her real life. Now Ella must work with the police and figure out what happened to Charlotte.

Overall I enjoyed this novel. The writing was good and the plot kept me interested even though the book was a tad predictable. I’ll definitely be checking out other works by Adam Mitzner. ( )

I got an ARC of Never Goodbye and read it, not realizing it was a sequel. Nearly all detective/mystery novels are really good about recapping and outlining characters and relationships so I didn’t feel lost, and I enjoyed the book. So when I reached the end, I stumbled across a little afterword by the author where he mentioned that the book was a sequel and invited readers to reach out to him via email with any thoughts. I did so, and he actually wrote back! Very nice personal touch.

But, I digress. I immediately went to Amazon and grabbed a copy of Dead Certain. I have to say, I loved it even more than the second! Great multilayered story, gasp-worthy twists with a clever reveal, and enough tragedy to bring humanity to the story and make you feel for the characters. Full disclosure - I did cry. Really fun read, looking forward to the third installment now! I’ll read them in order from now on. ( )

I obtained this book as a Kindle First choice for May 2017. It was very good, I would say 3.5 if we could give half points. The writing style is straightforward, not flowery or highly descriptive, and appropriate. Recommended if you like a quick read, and the storyaction moves along quickly. My most memorable takeaway from this book is that the two sisters are sluts...or is that just me being old-fashioned? LOL ( )
