"Lohmüller’s 'Verschlagene Lust' uses more recent approaches, among others Queer Studies and Lacanian Psychoanalysis, to retrace the subversive potential of the highly aesthetic “perversion” and claims that masochism plays a central role for the critical reflection on sources of subjectivity. Although literary masochism peaked in Vienna shortly before and during the fin-de-siécle period, Lohmüller’s wide-ranging study goes far beyond Vienna. He considers various artistic forms expressing Sacher-Masoch’s sentiment, starting with Hegel’s Master-Slave dialectic, followed by modern as well as postmodern confessional literature and performance artists such as Rafael Cansinos-Assens, Hermann Nitsch, and Antonin Artaud."
