The first thing that struck me about this book was the characters. Stupid as bricks, add to the fact that they don't take any safety precautions despite the fact that they should know better. The next thing to strike me was just how stupid the plot was, closely followed by the bad science. But that's all ok right? It's a horror book after all, so atmosphere and shit is all that matters, right? Problem with that is that the book has less atmosphere than mars itself! Bad science fiction and bad horror, combined with the power of bad writing, the scariest part was "to be continued". I picked this up when it was 99p on Kindle as I quite fancied a science faction, Mars, related book having enjoyed The Martian. Space exploration fascinates me but I find a lot of scifi too far fetched to enjoy but this seemed pitched at my level of believability. The plot involves a crew going to Mars to investigate what happened to the colony that had been set up there and from which there had been no contact since a disturbing last message. The book was entertaining and believable, although there was a nasty moment about 2/3 in when I thought this was going to become a diatribe about the perils of GM. Fortunately this was not to be and I picked the book up again and enjoyed it to the end. It’s not The Martian, but it (mostly) kept my attention and I would happily pick up the next in the series to find out more. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

All contact is lost with the first human colony on Mars during a long and destructive sandstorm. Satellite imagery of the aftermath shows extensive damage to the facility. The fifty-four colonists who called it home are presumed dead. Three years later, a new mission sets down on the planet surface to investigate what remains of the derelict site. But, it's not long before they realize the colony is not as lifeless as everyone thought. Someone is still alive -- hiding out somewhere. Yet, before they can find the elusive colonist, a strange illness starts to affect the crew. Pressure now mounts on Biologist, Dr. Jann Malbec, to locate the source and find a way to fight it. However, as she investigates she begins to suspect a dark and deadly secret lurking within the colony. A secret that threatens not just the crew but the entire population of Earth. With limited resources and time running out, she must find some answers and find them fast. Because if she doesn't, none of them will be going home. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

I thought the book was interesting enough and I paid full attention to about 75%. I don't know why, but I lost interest towards the end. I love watching scifi thriller movies but maybe a book isn't for me. ( )
