In this slyly funny and lavishly inventive novel, Nobel Prize winner V. S. Naipaul traces the unlikely career of Ganesh Ramsumair, a failed schoolteacher and impecunious village masseur who in time becomes a revered mystic, a thriving entrepreneur, and the most beloved politician in Trinidad. Naipaul laat ons de carrière volgen van Ganesh. Hij is bij alle baantjes die zijn omgeving hem aanraadt, niet zo gelukkig. De zaken lopen niet. Totdat hij een soort psycholoog wordt. Hij leest veel boeken over het onderwerp en begrijpt waarom mensen soms geestelijk ziek zijn en kan ze ook vaak helpen. Vanaf dat moment gaat het hem voor de wind, en zijn omgeving profiteert er van mee. Uiteindelijk komt hij zelfs in de politiek terecht, en ook dat blijkt hem goed af te gaan.
