Pete the Cat is on a bug safari with his friends. How many bugs do you think they will find?

They see a tiny black ant, a round red ladybug, and a big black spider. Then Pete finds a green caterpillar in the flowerpot. He takes it home to show Mom and Dad. Together they build a home for the caterpillar. Pete puts the caterpillar’s jar on the table beside his bed, but when he gets up in the morning, the caterpillar is gone!

Mom and Dad explain that the caterpillar has made a pupa for himself. Pete and his friends all watch the pupa, but nothing happens.

Will the caterpillar come out of the pupa? Will Pete be surprised to see what he has become?

=========

This I Can Read book uses short sentences, familiar words, and simple concepts for children eager and ready to read on their own. As with all Beginning Reading: Level 1 books in this series, this is a book designed to encourage and support the child’s independent reading experience.

Delightful illustrations, a well-known and beloved character young readers will instantly recognize, and a clever story all work together to make this a perfect beginning reader selection. Young readers will be excited to see what happens when the caterpillar comes out of the pupa in this science lesson within a story.

Highly recommended, especially for fans of Pete the Cat ( )

I love The Pete the Cat books! This is definitely a great little book that can be used as a mini introduction to bugs and how caterpillars turn into butterflies. (And I’m not scared of the pictures of the spiders!)

This book features, Pete the Cat, the silly cat beloved by children. In this level 1 reader, Pete the Cat goes on a bug safari and finds all sorts of bugs. He ends his safari by finding and keeping a green caterpillar that he brings home to show his parents. They help him build a home in a jar for his new friend. The next morning, he is upset that the caterpillar is missing. His parents show him that it’s not missing, it has just changed and will continue to change. They explain that something new will become of the caterpillar and he would have to wait to see what it would become. He waits, and waits, and waits, and finally, he watches a beautiful butterfly emerge. Pete says goodbye to his new friend and lets it fly away. This book would be great for a butterfly lifecycle unit in any classroom! ( )

Although the characters are fictional and non-human, I would still consider this text informational. The main idea of this text how a caterpillar can change into a butterfly. Pete and his parents find a caterpillar and take it home to watch it transform into a beautiful butterfly. This is a difficult scientific concept that is portrayed well for the audience of young readers. Children are taught that change is a good thing as they grow and age. The main idea of this text is supported through the pictures and the feelings of Pete as the caterpillar transforms into its new form. The main idea is also supported through the introduction of new vocabulary such as pups. This book shows that scientific concepts can be taught through fictional characters. ( )
