I mean, I hate all of the characters and the romance has zero development, but sheesh, Linda Howard writes some compulsively readable shit. Even the ones I kind of hate and rate low, I also kind of love? ( ) A reread of this old drama. I was in the mood for books where the hero does the heroine wrong and then has to grovel to get back into her good graces. This old romance fit right in but honestly he doesn't do much groveling. When he realizes she intends to kick him to the curb he just moves into her apartment and won't leave although he does do sweet things for her. Enjoyable. There was something real and touching about Tessa, even though she was also very much a romance novel fantasy character. Which is why I've given it an extra half star, in addition to the 3 it gets for pulling me to the end. I did find this an absorbing read, like all Linda Howard books, The storytelling always has a good pace with not too much padding. - just read the reviews below. Thanks Conkie for telling me this book was written in 1995. While reading I was immediately struck by how Brett's character seemed dated and that explains it, though of course 1995 isn't so long ago! It's an interesting if scary thing to think that once that kind of man seemed more usual. Also, in a 2021 romance novel it's hard to see that Tessa wouldn't run as fast as she could from such a man, especially after such a betrayal - write him off. But Tessa had a loyalty to her love - don't know what the words are - that was admirable. Something that lived on after him. Somehow more romantic than today's approach which seems to treat the beloved as disposable. There's something terribly rigid/unforgiving/cookie cutter about it, as if no one should be caught with such a weakness. But Tessa's love for Brett was hers, whatever maelstrom surrounded them. And Brett too seemed to be capable of a larger compassion. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
