Machine is a unique piece of fiction that encapsulates the very essence of earthly existence: how chance and random events influence seemingly unconnected lives and matter. Two stories of metamorphosis entwine: the first chronicles the life of a drop of oil from its very beginning within a small prehistoric horse's heart to its combustion within a Ford car engine in Texas, the second follows the lives of the passengers within the vehicle. Clarissa picks up a hitchhiker on the Interstate to San Antonio. She is a young, intelligent student willing to experiment with LSD. The hitchhiker is Jimmy Nash, who has been granted asylum in the United States from the Soviet Union and has successfully reshaped his identity. He reads Emily Dickinson's poetry and until a horrific accident had worked on an oil field. Both their lives appear to alter in direct correlation with the changing molecular structure of this single drop of oil. From the very start the reader is seduced by the author's unusual vision of the world we live in, from the drowning of Eohippus or 'the dawn horse' fifty-five million years ago to the inhalation of carcinogenic particles by a young woman in the 1970s. Hvordan skal man forklare, hvad en så besynderlig roman handler om? Man kunne sige, at det var en fortælling om, hvordan en tilfældighed fører til sygdom og død mange år senere. Man kunne sige, at det er en fortælling om, hvordan mennesker og begivenhedsstrømme mødes på en gade i Austin. Men man kunne også sige, at det er en roman om, hvordan man overvinder depression ved fortællingens kraft.

Omdrejningspunktet er Austin, Texas en dag i 1973. En bil kører ned ad gaden og i dens forbrændingsmotor eksploderer en lille dråbe benzin og forvandler sig til energi og udstødningsgasser. Benzin er dannet af olie, der er dannet af organisk materiale, der er blevet indkapslet for millioner af år siden. Et ben i historien handler om en lille forhistorisk hest, der i urtiden flygtede fra en kødædende dinosaur kun for at falde i en sump, hvor dens hjerte og resten af dens krop langsomt blev nedbrudt, indtil den blev gravet op og raffineret.

I bilen sidder Jim Nash, der blev født i Baku i Sovjetunionen, hvorfra han flygtede til Iran og videre til USA, og Clarissa, en ung kvinde, der egentlig er frygtelig bange for alt uforudsigeligt, men som alligevel har samlet ham op og taget et trip. Hvor benzinen kommer fra, og hvor den kræftfremkaldende partikel, der bliver resultatet, havner henne, har de ingen idé om.

Det lyder indviklet, men når man læser romanen, er det ikke svært at følge handlingen, selvom man selvfølgelig kan undre sig over, hvordan fortælleren kan kende sammenhængen. Sprogligt er bogen også nem at gå til, selvom Adolphsen fra tid til anden dykker endog meget detaljeret ned i f.eks. Sovjetunionens politiske opbygning, LSD’s kemiske sammensætning eller de bakteriestammer, der deltog i nedbrydningen af den lille hests organiske materiale.

Machine var hurtigt læst, og der var interessante iagttagelser undervejs, men rigtig grebet blev jeg aldrig – muligvis fordi jeg aldrig kunne slippe fornemmelsen af, at det var et meget bevidst formeksperiment, jeg havde mellem hænderne. ( )

In 85 short pages, Peter Adolphsen manages to trace the complete history of a drop of oil from its origins in the early Eocene through a story of the last moments of a Hyracotherium (a tiny prehistoric ancestor to the horse) where this drop of oil started in this tiny animals beating heart, through its geologic development and migration, its extraction and refinement into gasoline, and finally through the combustion process of 1970s Ford Pinto where this single molecule will find its ultimate destination, drastically altering the life of one of the passengers.

Adolphsen plays with the idea of Chaos Theory and coincidence throughout the novel tying what seems like a series of highly improbable events into a single narrative history told in unique almost omnipresent first person. Throughout the narrative Adolphsen is preoccupied with the science that makes these series of events happen from life and death, to the creation of oil from living matter, to the brain on drugs and the combustion of a car engine. In fact, the majority of the book is concerned with these in my estimation fascinating scientific details. What you'll find with Machine is a novel less concerned about the characters and their individual story, instead the focus is more about the external processes that shape them that constantly apart of their lives but largely unnoticed. I realize that all the precise scientific detail and jargon might come off as a bit dry and boring, and is not seamlessly integrated with the story as some would like, but I found Machine to be interestingly straightforward and at times beautifully written book exploring big ideas in a way fictional setting that I understood. It certainly isn't a book for everyone, but I'll definitely be rereading this one again. ( )

Death exists, but only in a practical, macroscopic sense. Biologically one cannot distinguish between life and death; the transition is a continuum. [...] The problem of defining death mirrors a corresponding difficulty with the definition of life: a living organism is formed of non-living material, organized so it can absorb energy to maintain its system, and death is thus the irreversible cessation of these functions.

Machine is a short novella: an exploration of life, death and transformation via the path of a drop of crude oil -- from its origins 55-million years ago in the decaying heart of a tiny prehistoric horse, through refinement to gasoline and into the tank of a 1970s car with a man and woman, and then... well you’ll have to read it and I wager you'll be surprised.

It’s a ping-pong of ideas, scientific and philosophical -- an essay (a tutorial at times) clothed in a fragmented, fable-like story. I’m not a fan of fables, but I am a fan of ideas and of short-form writing, and found Machine interesting to read. I would try more by Adolphsen. ( )
