1. The Day is Done by Lester Del Rey (1939) an old Neanderthal man (Hairy Ones), at the end of his days now that the Cro-Magnon man (Talkers) have taken over the land.
Rita: 3/5

2. Adam and No Eve by Alfred Bester (1941)
Rita: 3/5

3. Ogre by Clifford D. Simak (1943)
Rita: 2/5 what I found weird, in this story, was that the robot that was the accountant/law keeper for the company that had sent the humans to this planet, was programmed with the voice of a southern (U.S.) white cracker. She used an ugly racist expression on one page, employing the "N-word."

4. Invariant by John Pierce (1944)
Rita: 2/5

5. Desertion by Clifford D. Simak (1944)
Rita: 4/5

6. Rescue Party by Arthur C. Clarke (1946)
Rita: 4/5

7. The Chronokinesis of Jonathan Hull by Anthony Boucher (1946)
Rita: 2/5

8. Police Operation by H. Beam Piper (1948) -
Rita: 3/5

9. Tiger Ride by James Blish & Damon Knight (1948) -
A "belt" invented by Earth scientists that could take you up in the air, is really an alien, that tricked the scientists into blowing up themselves, and the corner of the Galaxy they had been quarantined on. Now it's heading for Earth.
Rita: 2/5

10. Over the Top by Lester Del Rey (1949) -
"He looked up toward the speck that was earth, with the tiny spot showing the Moon beside it. behind him, the air machine clicked busily, metering out oxygen. Two and a half weeks. Dave looked down at that, then. Well it might be long enough, though it probably wouldn't. But he had that much time for certain. he wondered if the really bright boys expected as much for themselves. or was it only because he wasn't in the thick of a complacent humanity, and had time for thinking, that he could realize what was coming?
"he slapped the air machine dully, and looked up at the Earth again. the fools! They'd asked for it; let them take their medicine now. they liked war better than eugenics, nuclear physics better than the science that could have found his trouble and set his glands straight to give him the body he should have had. let them stew in their own juice."
Rita: 2/5

11. Incommunicado by Katherine MacLean (1950) -
Rita: I skipped this one.

12. The Little Black Bag by C.M. Kornbluth (1950) -
Kornbluth follows the same premise he had with "The Marching Morons," about society in the future that has overbred humans with low IQ, and of course, those with the smarts, underbreed, because of....well, this gets political. The doctors of this era are morons, but their smart "keepers" have technology that basically does the work for them.one of these Dr bags goes missing, temporally, and ends in the possession of a discredited, alcoholic doctor, living in the poorest part of town. Well, once he finds the miracles of this doctor bag from the future, he stops drinking and uses the bag for only good. But his money-hungry assistant has other plans for it.
Rita: 4/5

13. Berom by John Berryman (1950) -
Rita: 3/5

14. The Waiting Game by Randall Garrett (1950) -
Did not read.

15. Protected Species by H.B. Fyfe (1951) -
"your message. you made in a little way the same decision we made in a big way. We deduce that you are one to understand our regret and shame at what happened between our races long ago."
"between --?"
"yes. for a long time, we thought you were all gone. we are pleased to see you returning to some of your old planets."
Otis stared blankly. some instinct must have enabled the Myrb to interpret his bewildered expression. He apologized briefly.
"I possibly forgot to explain the ruins." Again, Jal-Ganyr's eyes swiveled slowly about.
"they are not ours," he said mildly. "they are yours."
Rita: 4/5

16. The Years Draw Nigh by Lester Del Rey (1951) -
"Zeke shrugged and reached for his cigarettes. the sudden hunger in their eyes hit him, then, reminding him of stores now depleted in all those long years. He passed the package around, careful not to notice the hands That shook as they pulled out the cylinders."
Lol, smoking on a spaceship.
Rita: 2/5

17. Thinking Machine by H.B. Fyfe (1951) -
This story is the reason I checked out this book. For years I've been trying to find a short story I read long ago about a little boy who i forget why is with these overlord aliens who make bad sh*t happen on Earth with their dreams. This wasn't it. Call
This is about a miniature world of people whose sun is dying, and they find an alien to help them create a new world for them, if they will allow him to run experiments on it. It was a bit hard to visualize what was going on.
Rita: 3/5

And that's it. I struggled to get this far, and finally gave up about halfway through. I used to really love "golden-age sci-fi," but have evolved away from sexist/misogynistic authors. ( )
