History written from the perspective of the individuals who played significant roles and symbolized the transitional historical points or trends. And done in the marked wit of Malachy. Not the tight scholarship of a historian and seemless editing, but that is not what I expected. His cultural perspective is what I wanted and the book delivers. (

Explores the Ireland's history, from the early Celtic settlements through British occupation and struggles for independence, highlighting prominent heroes, artists, poets, and politicians.

An interesting review of Irish history through the lives of fifty people. McCourt is best with the more recent history (past 200 years). I particularly enjoyed the exploration of the modern "Troubles" because they happened in my lifetime.. (

McCourt's History of Ireland is a series of snapshots of people, places and events in Irish history deemed important in McCourt's eyes, ranging from mythological heroes to ambiguous saints to lesser-known politiicans.Great for an introductory glimpse into Irish history, or for someone who wants to revisit it through a comedic and honest perspective.
