Come share Christmas with your friends at the Vinyl Cafe Christmas has always been a special time at the Vinyl Cafe. For two decades, Stuart McLean travelled across the country every December with The Vinyl Cafe Christmas tour, bringing the gift of laughter and light during the darkest days of the year. The hilarious world of Dave and Morley was even more real--more vibrant--during the holidays. For many, the Vinyl Cafe Christmas stories became beloved family traditions. Now, for the first time, they have been brought together in this special collection--including the classic "Dave Cooks the Turkey," as well as five new, never before published Christmas stories. From mishaps with the Turlingtons and the tale of a young Dave's first holiday disaster to the surprising "Christmas Ferret" and the touching sign off in "The Christmas Card," these wonderful new stories will delight for years to come.     Brimming with charm and humour (often at Dave's expense), these twelve stories entertain on every page, reminding us what the holidays are all about.… (meer)

Loved this. Perfect short story length to read in the lead-up to Christmas. ( )

We lost a great raconteur when Stuart McLean died on February 15 2017. I first got to know Stuart when he did weekly gigs on Morningside, the CBC Radio morning show hosted by Peter Gzowski. In time CBC recognized that Stuart deserved a larger role and The Vinyl Cafe was born. It seemed like the whole country tuned in to see what Dave, Morley and the kids were up to.

The Introduction to this book tells us that the first story "Dave Cooks the Turkey" aired in 1996 and that it was such a hit that Stuart had to do a Christmas story every year thereafter. That spawned a cross-country tour every year with Stuart in his low-key (and oh so Canadian way) delivering stories to rapt audiences. Now this book has collected some of the best of those stories. It ends with the last story that Stuart wrote "The Christmas Card" and I do think it was the best of the lot. For once, Stuart inserted a little personal message into this story. Perhaps he knew there wouldn't be any more.

I like to think that Stuart and Peter Gzowski and some of the other Morningside regulars gather together for a regular chinwag and discussion of current events. I'd love to know what they think of our current situation. You are all greatly missed. ( )

I always used to listen to the monologues written and performed by the late [[Stuart McLean]] on CBC Radio. The fictional adventures of Dave and his family-wife Morley and children Sam and Stephanie were always funny and insightful. McLean passed away just under a year ago and Canadian readers and radio listeners were saddened by the loss of such a wonderful writer and performer. McLean had published his monologues in book form and recently his editor and radio producer published a selection of stories that related to Christmas. Some of the stories are so funny I laughed and cackled out loud. If anyone has not heard or read the story" Dave Cooks the Turkey"- google it right now and hopefully you can hear McLean's narration. Some of the stories were like old friends- I had heard them on the radio and was happy to read about the adventures of Dave, his family and neighbours. Another story that is laugh out loud is"The Christmas Ferret". I will return to this book when I need some humour and to remember the very talented man who wrote these stories. ( )
