Found this book from a list of readers' recommendations - can't remember what for unfortunately.

By choosing to pick up this one, I've come out on top because I haven't read anything like this book - and my goal is to work my way through the subgenera of romance.

I'm 40% of the way through and it feels like I've been reading for hours, but it is about 4 3/4 hours with 7 hours to go. Not sure I can last that long, which is why I'm making a note now. Probably will, as it is well written, and narrated expertly by Angela Dawe.

Wannabe reporter Maddie is a marvellous character, empathetic, who works for the "brutal" boss, Elena, head of a self-made media empire.

The novel is written from Maddie's pov. At first Maddie is not impressed by Elena, then decides she's occasionally human, which is worth exploring. Then she begins to fall for her boss - it has an implausible ring. But it does set up the drama for a romance plot.

Elena is an ice queen, and apparently the power and authority of an ice queen is one of the themes that people go for in this subgenre. Too icy for me, but still, interesting to know that this is something people are drawn to. Another theme, the slow burn, is well done here, because there's plenty happening to entertain along the way. However, the novel is exceptionally long for a romance, which I'm usually quick to criticise, but I'll reserve judgement!

Yet another talented Australian author I've never heard of until I swam into romance land:
"Lee Winter is an award-winning veteran newspaper journalist who has covered courts, crime, news, features and humor writing for almost three decades around Australia. Now a full-time author and part-time editor at Ylva, Lee is also a two-time Lambda Literary Award finalist and a triple Golden Crown Literary Award winner." ( )

This is my second Lee Winter book and I must say that I didn't like the characters as much, compared to Breaking Character. Don't get me wrong, Maddie and Elena are still great characters in their own rights, just not my personal favourites.
Which makes it even more obvious what a great writer Winter is.My main source of enjoyement with any book are the characters and I still absolutely loved this book. ( )

Recensione sul blog: https://thereadingpal.blogspot.com/2017/11/recensione-148-brutal-truth.html

Truthfulness? People didn't want the truth. She told
Elena as much.
Elena gave her a contemplative look. "The world
would run much more smoothly if people were able to
give and receive the brutal truth. Without omission.
Without guile or bright, fake smiles."

That damn book. I can't remember how many times I've read it. Let alone how many times I've listened to the audiobook narration by Angela Dawe. Apart from the fact that all books from Lee Winter are absolutely recommendable, "The Brutal Truth" is my absolute favourite.

It is very reminiscent of the film "The Devil Wears Prada", but in GAY. This is about the American media mogul Elena Bartell. Her employees fear her because she is a cold and unpredictable person. One day Elena and her company "Bartell Corp" are about to buy up a failing newspaper. That's where Elena meets the Australian writer Maddie Grey. She moved from Australia to New York some time ago to fulfil her dream of becoming a journalist. Though, she is anything but happy in the big city and her job.

When the aloof Elena meets the warm-hearted and open Maddie at the said newspaper, two worlds collide. The businesswoman is used to having everything done her way. Only rarely does anyone dare to contradict her. But Maddie, in particular, does not care about the mogul's social status. The young Australian loves to challenge the older American.

The dynamic between the two is really indescribable, especially in the last chapters. I loved the ending so much! And can you fall in love with a fictional character? Because Elena Bartell stole my heart.

Their story builds slowly. Step by step, you are drawn more into their relationship, and it is a journey worth taking.

Elena's lips shifted to her ear. "Why are you keeping me waiting, Madeleine? Haven't I been patient? (...)" *me fainting*

By the way, in a collection of short stories called "Sliced Ice", Lee Winter gave a little insight into the lives of Elena and Maddie after their story ended in the book.
