Kimberly Crepeaux is no good, a notorious jailhouse snitch, teen mother, and heroin addict whose petty crimes are well-known to the rural Maine community where she lives. So when she confesses to her role in the brutal murders of Jackie Pelletier and Ian Kelly, the daughter of a well-known local family and her sweetheart, the locals have little reason to believe her story. Not Rob Barrett, the FBI investigator and interrogator specializing in telling a true confession from a falsehood. He's been circling Kimberly and her conspirators for months, waiting for the right avenue to the truth, and has finally found it. He knows, as strongly as he's known anything, that Kimberly's story--a grisly, harrowing story of a hit and run fueled by dope and cheap beer that becomes a brutal stabbing in cold blood--is how it happened. But one thing remains elusive: where are Jackie and Ian's bodies? After Barrett stakes his name and reputation on the truth of Kimberly's confession, only to have the bodies turn up 200 miles from where she said they'd be, shot in the back and covered in a different suspect's DNA, the case is quickly closed and Barrett forcibly reassigned. But for Howard Pelletier, the tragedy of his daughter's murder cannot be so tidily swept away. And for Barrett, whose career may already be over, the chance to help a grieving father may be the only one he has left.--book jacket.… (meer)

I liked 90% of this but I think it grew unfocused and lost its edge towards the very end.

This reminded me very much of The Dry so if you liked that, I think you will like this too. ( )

It started with a confession . . . . kind of felt like I had just skipped to the end of the book, spoiled it for myself. I was concerned on how the rest of the book would go after that.

But the author took me for a ride through a small town in Maine. You get a feel for the little tourist town in the off season and a heartbreaking reality of drug use.

Grab this book if you are ready for a "who done it" book that's easy to read and characters that you're not sure if you should trust them. Who do you trust? Is that how it really happened? Was there more to the story? Who's pulling the strings? ( )

This book was just not my style. It was marred by a harsh New York accent that eliminated the letter "R" and grated on my ears. DNF. ( )

It’s been sometime since I read a Michael Koryta novel so when this one fell into my hands, I was more than ready to resume my acquaintance with this author that I have always enjoyed. From the beginning you see that what you are reading is a story that is so well done that it seems like the small Maine town itself should be one of the characters. If you like working out the “bad guy” and solving the mystery by having the facts fed to you a few at a time...you will love this one. I will admit that it did take off a bit on the slow side...that is what lost it a 5 star rating for me. Also despite having all the clues...I did figure it out but not until almost the end...which was both chilling as well as action packed. ( )

Michael Koryta is a very accomplished writer, and his books always have high holds at the library. I had not read one of his novels in a while, and when I looked up after starting the book, time had flown by: the mark of a great read!

It opens with a riveting description of a female suspect, Kimberly Crepeaux, confessing to her part in a double murder. The main character, Rob Barrett, is an FBI agent who is skilled in getting criminals to confess, and he believes Kimmy knows where the bodies are buried (so to speak). The problem is, the evidence doesn't align with the confession; and Rob will put his career, and his life, on the line to solve this case, which has ties to his childhood in Maine.

Koryta is a great story teller, and the writing is so seamless and propulsive that you just keep turning the pages. The only problem I had with the book is that I think the summary from the publisher gives too much away. We know from that blurb that no one is going to believe Rob, the evidence won't add up, and his career will be at stake. Knowing all this takes away some of the enjoyment of the book, because it diminishes the suspense in the beginning. That's my only criticism of this excellent story. I'm sure it will be widely read and enjoyed by my customers, who already have holds placed.
