Poi vidi il responsabile dei rumori notturni. Se ne stava acquattato su una trave, nell'oscurità. Era un piccolo gufo grigio. Teneva gli occhi chiusi e probabilmente dormiva. Spensi la torcia e lo osservai in silenzio da una certa distanza, per non spaventarlo. Era la prima volta che vedevo un gufo da tanto vicino. Più che un uccello, sembrava un gatto con le ali. Una bellissima creatura vivente.
«Aveva ragione lei. Posare per un quadro è molto più impegnativo di quanto avessi immaginato, – disse Menshiki. – Al pensiero che si viene dipinti, poco per volta si ha l'impressione che ci venga portata via l'anima». «Non portata via, ma spostata da un'altra parte. Che, in fondo, se uno ci pensa, è una buona definizione di arte», risposi. «Spostata in un luogo più duraturo, cioè?» «Certo. Se il ritratto è un'opera d'arte, sì». «Come quel postino sconosciuto raffigurato da Van Gogh, ad esempio?» «Esattamente». «Di sicuro quell'uomo non se lo immaginava nemmeno lontanamente che dopo cento e passa anni la gente sarebbe andata in un museo, o avrebbe aperto un libro d'arte, solo per poterlo ammirare immortalato in quel quadro». «Su questo non ci sono dubbi, non gli sarà nemmeno venuto in mente». «Per lui sarà stato solo un quadro stravagante, dipinto in un angolo di una misera casa di campagna da un pittore che doveva sembrargli un po' spostato…» Annuii. «Fa uno strano effetto, a pensarci – proseguì Menshiki. – Qualcuno, che non possiede nulla per essere ricordato in eterno, finisce per acquisire questa prerogativa grazie a un incontro casuale».
