The tramp, one of the coolest characters of all time, captivated audiences with iconic looks and whimsical antics. In "Modern Times" (1936), he serenades with a nonsense song, an on-screen vocal appearance, and a pre-Michael Jackson cool iconic moonwalk. ( ) The Tramp works in a factory, goes to prison, and some other stuff vaguely connected by the theme of The Great Depression Sucks. It's funny, and that's all I'm really looking for in a Charlie Chaplin movie. The lack of a story hurts it a lot, though. With its barrage of unforgettable gags and sly commentary on class struggle during the Great Depression, Modern Times—though made almost a decade into the talkie era and containing moments of sound (even song!)—is a timeless showcase of Chaplin’s untouchable genius as a director of silent comedy. When his boss demands more speed and efficiency, Chaplin goes crazy from his repetitious assembly line job. Primarily a silent film with music and sound effects, but occasional voices emanate from radios and television screens. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
