As I speak I will use all these words in a Christian sense, but my audience will hear them in a Hindu sense.  To preach the Gospel may perhaps be easy (I do not believe it is); to ensure that the Gospel is what the other man actually hears is a very different matter.

Do not pretend to be looking when you have first closed your eyes.

The questions Jesus provoked were deeply disturbing, compelling men to go to the roots of what they believed about God, man, and the meaning of life.  The Christian who asks questions cannot do so from within the impregnable citadel of orthodoxy.  He himself is not less exposed to questions than his Hindu friend.

So often when I have allowed myself to be drawn into argument, especially with Muslims, I have found that those words of Jesus have come into my mind, 'Sheathe your sword.' We must be open and vulnerable to the other man, even as Christ on the cross was open and vulnerable.  Part of being vulnerable is to listen--to expose our hearts and minds to the full force of what the other man is saying even when he challenges our most precious and deeply-held convictions, putting faith itself at risk.  To close our minds at this point, to refuse the pain of listening, is unbelief.

We need to show ordinary Christians that the mission to men of other faiths and of no faith is something they can undertake...without being organized, and without being asked to do it by higher authority.
