The story that drew national media attention when DC Comics killed their greatest hero is collected here. When a hulking monster emerges from an underground resting place and begins a mindless rampage, the Justice League is quickly called in to stop the colossal force of nature. But it soon becomes apparent that only Superman can stand against the monstrosity that has been nicknamed Doomsday. Battling their way through America, the two fight to a standstill as they reach the heart of Metropolis. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever. Collects Superman #496-497, Superman: The Man of Steel #18-19, Justice League of America #69, Supreman #74-75, and Action Comics #684.… (meer)

I'd read this 100 years ago, but I'm pretty sure I skimmed it and I definitely didn't remember any of the details. I really liked this, largely because of the visual storytelling. A lot of the dialogue still reeks of 80s/90s exclamations, very comic-booky in that sense, but some panels are fantastic - one of the Justice League members getting thrown through a family's window, Superman getting more desperate and pissed off in the final few pages were great to look at. I think this could have been longer and more fleshed out, and definitely would've liked to see a more varied strategy from Supes other than kicky punchy, but overall one of my favorite Supermans to date. Loved the epilogue told through the Metropolis Newspapers and Magazines, with quotes from fictional and non-fictional characters (Shaq, John Goodman, Dan Rather). ( )

This story had an interesting concept for a conflict arc, important dilemmas to address, a great idea for resolution, and a lot of potential for character development. If it fulfilled all of its potential, it would probably be the best Superman story ever written, and likely worth five stars.

The execution is trite, shallow, and cartoonish (in the pejorative sense), almost a satirical caricature of itself. It fails to deliver on almost any of its promise. What little it does deliver gets wiped away in subsequent publications about Superman and JLA. If this was all I judged to produce a rating on Goodreads, it would be one star. The best things I can say about the final product (igoring the failure to make the best of the underlying ideas) are that it's not as bad as The Jungle and I got my copy for free.

Great ideas only offer so much value when they aren't handled well. The result is two stars. Given the way Goodreads identifies two stars as "it was ok" at the time of this writing, that feels like a generous rating, but it's not quite bad enough to get the lowest possible rating. ( )

Purely classic...
Superman and Doomsday go head-to-head in this epic battle which ends in one of them walking away... only one of them.
This comic book series is jam-packed with epic battles, cheesy one-liners, and pure comic book gold. This is one for the ages!
If you have not read this one yet then you need to remedy that! 😉 ( )

I wouldn't think that Punch Guy punching Other Punch Guy to death would be considered groundbreaking and innovative, but here we are. ( )
