I've read quite a few of Rinehart's mysteries/thrillers and humorous stories, and the majority were dated but interesting in terms of the plots, characters, or both. Despite their flaws, I'd generally recommend them to those who enjoy early 20th century fiction. By contrast, this one is an extremely dated melodrama with an alleged happy ending, which I wouldn't recommend to anyone other than a scholar investigating popular (mis)conceptions of the Red Scare. The romance is somewhat problematic, as usual, but the xenophobia and propagandistic elements are overwhelmingly awful. Once a "hero" cites the KKK as a positive inspiration for his intended actions, there's just not a heck of a lot worth salvaging. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
