A special word of appreciation is due Philip Hofer, whose admirable summation of the four meetings was one of their out standing features and whose words, as they appear here, have suffered severely in color and content because of limitations of space; Mr. Hofer's generous acceptance of drastic editorial abridg ment matched in quality the excellence of the commentary with which he brought our meetings to a close. It is a pleasure also to acknowledge the cordial hospitality of John P. Coolidge, Director of the F ogg Museum, and his entire staff. I am sure that The Book builders of Boston, the Press's partner in the symposium and in the publication of this book, will allow me to express our joint gratitude to all.
