'The Tyger' is, of course, present, as is 'And Did Those Feet in Ancient Time', which was later set to music as the patriotic hymn 'Jerusalem'. Even though I tired of all the God stuff and disliked Blake's explicit refutation of the teachings of the Enlightenment, there was much I enjoyed here. The 'Proverbs of Hell' are extremely quotable and entertaining, as are the 'Auguries of Innocence'. 'The Garden of Love' was a choice condemnation of organised religion, despite Blake's overt theism. I also appreciated the cynical approach to romantic love, shown in 'Love to Faults is Always Blind' and 'The Look of Love Alarms'. All told, this was much more engrossing than I expected and the selection is recommended for those wanting a taste of the work of this influential poet. Hear the voice of the Bard Who Present, Past, & Future seesWhose ears have heardThe Holy WordThat walk'd among the ancient trees.--from "Songs of Experience" Both as poet and painter, William Blake created uncompromising, highly original art. He was strongly influenced by the spiritual: he claimed to have seen angels, and to have spoken with the many supernatural beings who populated his verses and visual images. The many remarkable works gathered in this very special collection come from his Poetical Sketches, There Is No Natural Religion, Songs of Innocence and Experience, The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, Visions of the Daughters of Albion, The Book of Urizen, For the Sexes: The Gates of Paradise, and others. Blake's powerful use of language truly makes it possible--as he wrote in "Auguries of Innocence"--"To see a World in a Grain of Sand, And a Heaven in a Wild Flower."
