If you take this book with a grain of salt, realizing that it is merely a kind of cut and paste tv movie thriller, it's good for that. The opening chapter is a good hook and you kind of want to see what happens next, no matter how stupid you think the characters are acting. You know, like in horror movies when you wonder why the gang splits up or someone goes down into the dark basement alone. WHY are you even doing that? Yet we keep watching, right? Also, some things are just predictable. Character motivations are selfish without much deep delving into human condition as to why, which sort of makes the protagonist seem like a turd. But again, this isn't a book trying to be anything other than a splaying on the couch read, so take with a grain of salt and it'll be fine. ( ) It is immediately clear from the first chapter that this book is completely bonkers and knowing that right from the get-go makes most of this a delicious, fast paced crazy romp. Unfortunately, it gets even too crazy for a book you know & want to be crazy. I think my best summary is that it feels like a slightly more edgy Lifetime movie but without a complete explanation of why everything that happens happens. Does that make any sense? Probably not. But this wacky book doesn’t really make sense either. All that said, if you are in the mood for a page turner that just needs to mindlessly entertain, this will do. Oh my goodness, what a page turner. I see why Reece picked this one for her book club. Recommending this one to my friends. I just wish there would have been more with the documentary, like it actually being made at the end. I also felt like it ended somewhat abruptly. Other than those minor complaints I really enjoyed this book. I was glad Mark died towards the end. After Erin, a documentary filmmaker, and Mark, an investment banker, wed, they decide to spend their honeymoon on the picturesque island of Bora Bora. While scuba diving off the shore, Erin and Mark make a mysterious discovery; they stumble upon something in the water - something that was definitely left there intentionally. From that point on, their honeymoon shifts from an intimate, romantic vacation to a stress induced ordeal full of factors that could change their lives forever. The first chapter of this book is REALLY good... I would even say that the first third of this book is great. Readers learn so much about Erin and Mark (and even the subjects of Erin's documentary) in such a short period of time; it's clear that Steadman's strengths lie in her character development. However, once we discover what the couple has found, the plot loses all momentum and drags a bit too much for my liking. While this novel still fits into the never ending psychological thriller trend, I would definitely consider it an overall better novel than the contemporary thrillers out there (i.e books by Ruth Ware, Paula Hawkins, AJ Finn, etc...). geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
