Honor and Joshua were high-school sweethearts, though pretty much her entire family opposed their relationship. Honor broke it off after Joshua chose to take the blame for a church fire and they went their separate ways.
Now, both are back in Love, Alaska. Honor returned after college and now has a job she loves rehabilitating wildlife. She, and others, thought they'd get the Ransome land when Joshua's grandfather, Bud, passed away. Instead, his will leaves it to his two grandsons. Theo is convinced he doesn't want to return to Alaska and wants to sell the land to the highest bidder. Joshua doesn't really see a future in Love either . . .
I didn't like that in their youth Honor and Joshua had a sexual relationship that resulted in Honor being pregnant. (Honor chose not to tell anyone and ended up miscarrying.) I didn't like that the town, though calling themselves Christians, still seemed to hold grudges against Joshua for what they thought he did as a teenager. I thought Lauren's boyfriend/husband (I wasn't clear on what he was to her) bailed on her when she got breast cancer--obviously Lauren struck out more than once at finding true love.
I did like that Hazel was gracious and compassionate and willing to hope that the boys had changed in the intervening years. I liked that the brothers admitted to Honor what their reasons were for opposing her relationship with Joshua years before. I liked that Joshua was willing to become Violet's father even though she wasn't his biological child. I liked that Hazel and Jasper seemed to have true, lasting love for each other. ( )
