A colony world falls silent. Grace Gushiken is a grifter and a liar. Worse, she's an esper, an abhorrent creation of the Old Empire, on the run from the Republic's justice. Nathan Chevell captains the free trader Tyche. He's no pirate, but he's no white knight either. There's no business in helping strays. Thrown together on a mission to the edge of space, they find the doomed planet Absalom Delta deserted, its people enslaved by the insect-like Ezeroc. The aliens have descended like locusts on humanity, consuming all in their path. No one is safe. Even the Republic Navy is powerless against them. With nothing but an aging starship running low on luck, Grace and Nate clash against the might of an alien kingdom. The Ezeroc have arrived, and they are hungry.… (meer)

A space opera with a fairly familiar cast of characters venturing into unknown hazards. What with RL stuff getting in the way, it took me several weeks to read this book in short sessions. That may be why I found I wasn’t always remembering quite what was going on (ie which dangers were next up on the play list). I also had to suppress my logical brain which kept flagging up possible inconsistencies.

The prose was generally easy to read, although a few times I tripped over typos and odd phrasing. For an action-driven plot, we seemed to spend a lot of time in the characters’ heads, and I felt we were rehashing the same internal issues more than necessary. The characters fulfilled their roles, although sometimes I felt they did what the plot needed rather than reflecting their personalities.

Overall, entertaining SF adventure which needs considerable suspension of disbelief.

Fun. Although billed as space opera it doesn't quite have that graitas, but it works well as part of the Trader-SF sub-genreVerging into mil-SF as there's a lot of interplay with the military forces.

Tyche is a battered old trader, crewed by a bunch of misfits some born out of the Old Empire, and others gathered along the way, but in the New Republic it pays to keep your head down and even then the Navy will cheat you on an honest deal. But one thing both sides agree on is that espers (telepaths) were the worst invention of the war, trained elites who could make you do anything. Tyche doesn't know that their newest crewmate is fleeing from her family's expectations that she live up to the old code. For her ESP has brought more problems than it solves, but another ship is another chance to run. And Tyche is running further than usual - she's been hired to replace a Guild gate which has gone very uncharacteristically silent, and everyone hopes it's a rare technical glitch. It's a long trip, not without it's own difficulties, and when they arrive to a silent planet there's only a deserted Navy battleship drifting in orbit.

The jumps between the characters are a little bit abrupt in places, but generally works fairly well. ( )

Now *that’s* SF

Aliens, reactor overloads, impossible stacked on impossible, plasma blasts and nuclear tipped torpedos...that’s the good stuff. Enough intrigue to make 007 proud while John McClain swoons in admiration at the last second escapes.

Really it’s just a collection of good old tropes, but the writing to flesh it out is excellent. Firefly-esque in a lot of ways, but with a little harder edge. The pacing ramps up slowly to a huge finish.

Buying the next book. Worth it. ( )

**** SPOILER ALERT ****
A milk run of a shipment at high pay. Easy Peasey, right? WRONG!!
Well, therein lies the tale of "Tyche's Flight'. Parry delivers an action-packed, edge of your seat tale that's full of twists and turns and intrigue too.
Along the way the author does a fantastic job of world building and character development as he introduces us to the main cast.
Nate, Kohl, El, Hope, Grace and the eponymous Tyche herself. For as is done in the "Doctor Who" and "Star Trek" universes Tyche is as much of a character as the "T.A.R.D.I.S" and the "U.S.S. Enterprise" are in their respective "universes".
It will be "Fascinating", to quote Capt. Spock, to read the further adventures of the Tyche and her people.
In the interest of transparency: I was given a free review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
