This book had a great influence on my knitting. I learned to add designs to my work, and make them one-of-a-kind. And the patterns were so interesting, and easy to make. Mosaic knitting allows the knitter to knit complex color designs without the use of bobbins. ( )

I am a self-taught left-handed knitter. I bought "Mosaic Knitting" when it first came out. It inspired me to knit a complex multi-colored and multi-patterned blanket.

It was the fourth of four now-classic volumes cataloging knitting stitch patterns, sometimes called stitch dictionaries. Each pattern is illustrated by a black and white photograph, along with the clearly charted directions.

The charts are a revelation. No more twisted balls, or awkwardly holding multiple yarns. You can knit intricate multi-colored designs with only one color of yarn per row using simple slip-stitch patterns! In fact, based on the extensive information in this book, i began creating my own slip-stitch patterns.

Barbara Walker's "Mosaic Knitting" is much more complete than Roxana Bartlett's "Slip-Stitch Knitting: Color Pattern the Easy Way," which i found rather disappointing,

This book has been brought back into print by Meg Swanson's Schoolhouse Press - which has reprinted all of Barbara Walker's knitting pattern dictionaries.

This new edition is not just a reprint but includes a significant number (116!) of new charted mosaic patterns from Barbara Walker which she calls "Magic Mosaics".

The new edition is lacking the color plates included in the original edition, but this is not a great loss. The photos illustrated some of the patterns used for items like lamp shades and ponchos. In my opinion the color combinations were not very nice and the garments look rather dated. But this doesn't detract from the usefulness of the patterns themselves, which you can apply in your own choice of colors to any knit items you like. ( )

Knitting stitches in a mosaic design format. This is the book that put slip-stitch knitting into the knitting history books. Walker coined the term mosaic knitting, and her definitive book on the subject was first published in 1976. This revised edition includes 116 new charted mosaic designs to complement the 157 charted designs featured in the original edition. Large-scale black-and-white charts, each with an accompanying knitted sample of the design, leave the reader to choose appropriate colors. This is not a project book but one that will appeal to the adventurous knitter and knitwear designer. Highly recommended for large public libraries and textile collections.?JZ

Mosaic knitting is still a relatively new term in the knitter's vocabulary, it describes a novel development in color-knitting technique and a whole new class of patterns. This book contains 313 mosaic patterns, including 116 brand-new, never before seen patterns. The basic technique for mosaic knitting is neither unusual nor excessively demanding, if you know how to knit and you know how to slip a stitch you are ready to work. The first chapter, will tell you exactly how to use every chart in this book. Read this section with needles and yarn in hand and work the example patterns as you go. You will be well prepared to master all the intriguing mosaic patterns throughout this book.

Mosaic Knitting, sometimes known as slip stitch knitting, is a knitting method used to add color to patterns without carrying more than one strand of yarn at a time. Each row of knitting is done with only one color, following a chart, while the second color stitches are slipped without being knitted. In order to create the pattern, the knitter follows a chart. Each pattern row consists of two rows of knitting and slipping before changing to a new row of the chart and the other color of yarn. The designs are geometric in nature, with a graphic result similar to dot matrix printing. Charts for 2 color mosaic knitting use black and white squares. The color to be used for each round is indicated by a square in a side box of the chart.

Mosaic knitting charts never have you slip more than a few stitches of the other color before knitting in the current color. The floats carried on the back of the work are usually shorter than in stranded or fair isle knitting techniques. However, because there are floats, the resulting fabric is less stretchy than one color or intarsia knitting patterns. You may knit mosaic charts in stockinette stitch, garter stitch, or a combination. Mosaic knitting worked in garter stitch will look different because of the purl bump texture.
