Onderdeel van de reeks(en)
The third volume in the series The Bible As Book examines aspects of the Bibles produced during the Reformation period, which marked a time of crisis and of blossoming for the Bible. Many lay people were offered the biblical text in the vernacular for the first time; however the biblical text was also being exploited for political and other ends. This study offers several perspectives on the period, encompassing the Reformers' reconsideration of language and linguistics, their theories and methods of translation, and their relationship with the Vulgate text. It explores the various roles of the visual medium in communicating German, Dutch, French and English messages to the Reformed faith. In addition, it offers evidence suggesting a definitive place of printing for the first complete English Bible, and features examinations of Martin Luther, William Tyndale, John Knox and George Joye.
