Turns out I'm sufficiently Extremely Online to already know most of what this book has to say about the toxic stew of ethnonationalism, misogyny and frustrated entitlement that contributed to the already-decaying alt-right and its associated movements (the manosphere, g*merg*ters etc). Nonetheless it's a solid survey of a particular historical moment (2016–17), if occasionally glib and lazy about the non-Democratic left. And undoubtedly these same forces, and the people associated with them who are still standing (adios Milo, Baked Alaska, Cernovich, etc), will keep looking for new ways to repackage reaction as punk for a while yet. Media accounts to the contrary, the Alt-Right didn't just burst out of nowhere in 2016. They have been building their network quietly for years, using bulletin boards and social media to spread a toxic hybrid of technological utopianism, reactionary philosophy, and racial hatred. Wendling traces the rise of the movement and the evolution of its ideas, and he introduces us to some of its key figures. Exploring links between Alt-Right rhetoric and hate crimes and terrorism, he shows that the evidence connecting them is undeniable. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
